Cockroaches. Whether it be in the home, office, or business, no one wants to see these disgusting creatures. Here in California, we have several types that bug us. The most prolific is the German Cockroach (Blattella germanica) with egg cases containing between 30 to 40 young that can start reproducing on their own in just under 2 months’ time. These are commonly found inside buildings, but sometimes can be outside as well.
Second on the list would be the American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana). These are those big reddish brown beasties you see inside and outside near sources of moisture, and average between one and a half to two and a quarter inches in length. Often referred to as “Water Bugs”, this is one of the few species found in America that can use its wings to glide, or fly. Nightmarish indeed.
Then we have the Oriental Cockroach (Blatta orientalis). This is also a large pest, growing up to one inch in length. Usually found in basements, crawlspaces, or outside in other moist spots such as under logs, mulch, or rotting vegetation. Distinctly black in color and shiny in appearance, this is one bug you won’t soon forget.
